DAVID B. ALLEN and his wife, Maria (Terry) Allen, were born in Connecticut; the former in East Windsor, March 1, 1809; the latter in Enfield, Hartford County, January 1, 1810. They were married in Connecticut, May 7, 1854. Their children are Mabel M., Elizabeth H., Amelia B., Loretta W., Mary F. (died September 18, 1871, Harriet G. (died October 8, 1848 and Julia A. (died July 17, 1870. Daniel and Submit Allen, parents of David B. were born in Connecticut; the former died in 1847, the latter in 1857. The old homestead on which Mr. Allen was born in Connecticut came in possession of the Allen family in 1730 and is now in the possession of Seth S. Allen, one of the lineal descendants. Christopher and Hannah (Griswold) Terry, parents of Mrs. Allen, were also natives of Connecticut, where the former died in 1849, the latter in 1839. Mr. Allen settled in Fulton County in 1855. He has been justice of the peace for ten or twelve years. Post-office, Pettisville. Business, County Commissioner.
ADAM ZIMMERMAN came from Switzerland about the commencement of the Revolutionary war as a soldier in one of the British German Regiments. He was taken prisoner at Trenton, and when exchanged, immediately enlisted in the Army of the United States, and enduring the hardships common to the Revolutionary soldier. He was captain of a company, and at one time went into battle after living for three days previous on parched corn. He was wounded by a rifle ball passing through his body. He recovered from the wound, and at the close of the war, was married to a Miss Shat, and settled in Frederick County, Maryland where he died leaving three children: George, Catharine and Polly. The widowed mother married Jacob Weller and moved to Virginia. Of these children, Catharine married Andrew Moore; Polly married Christian Norman; and George was bound to a blacksmith when fourteen years old and served until twenty-one years of age. He was married in Virginia to Barbara Norman and removed to Champaign County, Ohio in 1808. Champaign was then a frontier county. He was there during the war of 1812 and was engaged in gunsmithing, making swords, tomahawks, butcher knives, etc. for Hull?s Army, a substitute having been procured for him, that he might be left at home to work in the shop. He died in 1841 leaving five children: Katharine, John, George W., Joseph N. and Isaac. Katharine married Jacob Whitmore, a farmer; John is an eminent physician; Joseph died in 1841; Isaac is a farmer; and Mrs. Zimmerman still living, was ninety-two years of age, October 20, 18874. George W. Zimmerman was born April 31, 1814. At the age of sixteen he took charge of a saw mill, and labored with his father until he was twenty-two years of age. He then commenced the lumber business for himself with $16.18 in money. He was prosperous, soon bought some land, and when that was paid for bought more until he was the owner of 500 or 600 acres. He then turned his attention to farming, stock raising, commission business and agencies. He was married to Sarah Berry, April 19, 1842 They had a family of five children: Elizabeth J., Clara A., Sylvester B., John W., and Ampy W. In the Spring of 1871, the father divided the sum of $30,000 among his children, seeing them happily settled as farmers. Mr. Zimmerman was left free to indulge in a taste which he had always felt, for raising bees. He traveled over five states viz.: Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio and Indiana making observations as a practical bee keeper, for he became at the age of fourteen years, the owner of a colony of bees in a log gum and has ever since been experimenting in that line. After trying many patent hives, in the year 1868, he improved and adopted the Langstroth movable comb hive, which he introduced with the greatest success wherever he traveled. For the past ten years he has made a specialty of this business and has been engaged in raising queens for fifteen years. He settled in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio in 1872, and introduced the Italian Bees and his improved frame. He located at Pleasant Grove Apiary where he keeps from fifty to sixty stocks of Italian bees. At lease 2,000 of his hives are in use in Henry and adjoining counties. He is now President of the North American Bee Keepers? Society, to which office he was elected in 1875, and which society holds its next annual meeting at Philadelphia on the Centennial grounds, October 25, 1876.
GEORGE P. CAMPBELL, son of Z. B. and Lydia A. Campbell ? the former born in Stark County, Ohio, the latter in Green County, Pennsylvania, - was born in Green County, Pennsylvania, March 10, 1847. He was married in Henry County, Ohio, December 22, 1870 to Sarah H., daughter of John and Anna Scofield of New York who was born in Cayahoga Co., Ohio, September 9, 1839. They have one son, Clair S., born January 27, 1872. Mr. Campbell settled in Fulton County in 1872. Post-office, Tedrow. Business, physician. Residence, Spring Hill.
DAVID K. NUMBERS, son of Jacob and Amelia Numbers; the former residing in Michigan; the latter (deceased), was born in Wayne county, Ohio December 21, 1844. He was married in Ottokee, August 4, 1875 to Lou Rowley, who was born in Michigan, October 25, 1857. Her parents, Marcus and Jerusha Rowley were born ? the former in New York; the latter in Pennsylvania, and reside in Michigan. They had two sons, Lafayette and George who served in the war of the Rebellion; the former belonged to Company A, 9th Michigan Cavalry and was discharged after two years? service on account of ill health; the latter was honorably discharged at the close of war. Enoch Numbers, brother of the subject of this sketch, enlisted in the Union army in 1861. He received a flesh wound at the battled of Pittsburg Landing, served his three years and was honorable discharged, but with impaired health which finally caused his death. Mr. Numbers with his parents came into Fulton County in 1845. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, merchant and postmaster.
LYMAN N. COOK, son of Lyman and Mehitable Cook, of New York was born in Fulton County, Ohio February 5, 1848. He was married in Wauseon, December 25, 1871, to Jennie Swart, who was born in New York, July 4, 181. Her parents, John and Amy Swart, were born, the former in New York, the latter in Connecticut. The children of this couple are: George E., born December 28, 1873 and Elmer, an adopted son born June 28, 1861. David Swart, brother of Mrs. Cook, enlisted in the Union army in 1861, served one year, and died and was buried in the South. Post-office, Tedrow. Business, farmer, section 32.
JOHN J. SCHNALL, and his wife Catharine (Remaly) Schnall, were both born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, January 24, 1805, and December 31, 1802. They were married in the same county in March, 1824. They have a family of nine children, five living: Jacob born January 9, 1825; Mary A. born March 1, 1827; Caroline, born September 17, 1829; Harrison born January 17, 1831; Sarah R; Harriet born in 1839 (deceased), Augusta born in 1843; infant son (deceased); James H., born April 7, 1837. Jacob and Barbara Schnall, parents of the subject of this sketch were natives of Pennsylvania, Northampton County where they died. John and Catharine Remaly, parents of Mrs. Schnall, were also born and died in Pennsylvania. Mr. Schnall was in the Border war and also in the Black Hawk war. He purchased and commenced building in Fulton County in 1837. There were at that time but three white residents in what was then York Township. Wild animals were abundant. In 1842-3 Dover Township was organized. Mr. Schnall has filled the office of county surveyor twenty-one years, also other offices of trust. Post-office, Tedrow. HIRAM INMAN was born in Huron County, March 8, 1818. His father, Malavery Inman, was born in Rhode Island, and his mother, Sarah Inman, was born in Huron County, Ohio, where both parents died. The subject of this sketch has been three times married. His first wife was Rhoda Price, by whom he had five children: Abram, who died in Libby prison; Phoeba, Silva, and Hiram. His second wife was Lucretia Silcox; she left no children. His third wife was Sarah A. Hill, by whom he had three children: Hannah (deceased), Sarah and Hiram. Mr. Inman enlisted in the Union army in Company F., 10th Ohio Cavalry, in 1873, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Post-office, Tedrow. Business, farmer, section 33.
Rev. R. C. SHEPHERD, son of James and Jennie Shepherd, the former of Virginia, the latter of Georgia, was born in Berkley County, Virginia, April 13, 1813. He was married to his second wife, Sarah Reckner, in Fulton County July 16, 1871. His wife was born in Maryland in 1823. His first wife was Catherine Jewell, by whom he had seven children: William R. (deceased), Orilla (deceased), Z. W., James K., Nancy J. (deceased), Mary E. (deceased), and Melvilla. James enlisted in the Union army, 67th Regiment O.V.I. in 1862, served one year, and was discharged on account of sickness. Isaac and Martha Reckner, parents of Mrs. Shepherd, were born in Maryland, and came to this county in 1854. Mr. Shepherd preached in Fulton County thirty-two years ago. Post-office, Tedrow. Business, shoemaker and Disciple minister.
OSCAR A. COBB and his wife, Phoebe (Knapp) Cobb, were born in Connecticut, the former in New London County, June 23, 1817, the latter in Fairfield County, October 6, 1820. They were married in New York City, November 3, 1841. Their children are: Ernest G., born August 17, 1843 (deceased March 2, 1863); Albert H., born July 20, 1848; Ada E., born September 14, 1851 (deceased September 22, 1856); James E., born January 27, 1857 (deceased September 14 1858); and Dora A., born January 19, 1861. The parents of this couple, Anson and Nancy Cobb, were born in Connecticut, August 14, 1786 and July 22, 1791; they removed to New York; and Archa and Betsey Knapp, also born in Connecticut, September 10, 1786 and February 10, 1783. They removed to Fulton County in 1846. Ernest G. Cobb enlisted in Company A, 67th Regiment O.V.I. December 14, 1861, served one year, was taken sick and discharged and died eleven weeks after returning home. Mr. Cobb has filled the office of sheriff four years, has been infirmary director, township trustee and real estate assessor. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, farmer and stock raiser, section 35.
WILLIAM WAID, son of Warner and Hannah Waid of Connecticut, was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, April 18, 1818. He has been married three times. His first wife was Orpha G. Canfield, born in New York, March 8, 1823, died April 7, 1864. She had five children: Minnie M., born November 30, 1847; Warner T., born 1850 (deceased); Charles H., born December 19, 1851; Emma L., born April 18, 1857; and Lemuel F., born October 1, 1859. His second wife was Hannah E. Bartlett, born April 26, 1829, deceased February 18, 1872. He was married to his third wife, Maria Kipp, born in New York, January 15, 1833, September 11, 1872. They have one child, Clarence W., born May 22, 1874. The parents of his present wife are Peter and Prudence Kipp. Mr. Waid settled in Fulton County in 1845. He has been justice of the peace and township trustee. He had a half-brother in the Union army. Post-office, Emery. Business, farmer and postmaster, section 5.
CHARLES H. WAID, son of William and Orpha Waid was born in Fulton County, Ohio, December 19, 1851. Post-office, Emery. Business, farmer, section 5.
ABNER WILCOX and his wife Mary A. (Collamore) Wilcox, were born in New York, the former in Clinton County, October 21, 1819, the latter in Sackett?s Harbor, August 4, 1818. They were married in Rochester, New York, March 3, 1841. Their family consists of seven children: Augustus born December 25, 1841; Albertus, born July 28, 1844; Josiah, born October 28, 1846; Eli, born February 1, 1849; Truman, born September 3, 1852; Thomas, born April 26, 1856; Doc D., born August 19, 1859. Mr. Wilcox?s parents, Josiah and Hannah (Bullis) Wilcox, were born in Vermont, the former December 16, 1788, and died in New York in 1859; the latter in 1789 and died in Fulton County May 24, 1875. Mrs. Wilcox?s parents, Elisha and Polly (Rowe) Collamore, were born, the former in Kennebec, Maine, September 25, 1789, and was drowned in the Otonabe River April 17, 1844; the latter was born in Jefferson County, New York, August 27, 1791 and died in Rochester, New York, 1832. Mr. Wilcox had four sons in the Union army: Augustus enlisted in 1861; Albertus in 1861; Josiah in 1862 and Eli in 1865; all were faithful soldiers and received an honorable discharged at the close of the war. Mr. Wilcox sailed on the lakes eighteen summers in all positions. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, proprietor of hotel and farmer.
JOSEPH SHADLE settled in Fulton County in 1845. He is a son of Phillip and Mary Shadle, the former of Pennsylvania, the latter of Ireland, and was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, August 16, 1815. He was married in the same state, October 18, 1833 to Jane Burke, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Burke, the former of Connecticut, the latter of Maryland, who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 29, 1812. Their family consists of ten children: Hosea, Richard, William Allen, Ferdinand, Luther, Harvey, Rebecca, Mary A. Emiline, and Florence. Richard enlisted in the Union army in the 14th Regiment O.V.I. in 1861. Hosea enlisted in Company A., 67th Regiment O.V.I. in 1861 and was discharged on account of poor health after serving nine months. Allen enlisted in the 100th Regiment O.V.I. in 1861 and was discharged on account of poor health after six months. Ferdinand enlisted in the 10th Ohio Cavalry, in 1862 and was honorably discharged in 1865. Mr. Shadle has filled the offices of county commissioner, justice of the peace, and constable. WILLIS H. NORTON, son of Charles and Delilah (Vandora) Norton was born in Wyandot County, Ohio, June 4, 1850. He was married in Michigan, July 18, 1874 to Annie Herreman, daughter of Henry and Salvina Herreman, the former of Genesee County, New York, the latter of Ashtabula County, Ohio who was born in Ottokee, Fulton County, Ohio, November 19, 1856. They have one son, Jesse L., born May 1, 1875. Mr. Norton is one of a family of nine children: Ella, Ida, Charles M., born in Marseilles, Wyandot County, Ohio, November 14, 1856; Frank, Blanche, Roscoe, Effie, Alida B., and Floy. The father of these children was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut, August 3, 1826, and the mother was born in Livingston County, New York, September 3, 1829. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, farmer.
JAMES GALBRAITH and his wife were born in Ireland, the former August 29, 1816. They were married in Michigan. Mr. Galbraith has been married three times. His first wife, Mary Bodkin, had three children: Mary (deceased), Charles B., and Martha. His second wife, Sarah H. Patterson, had four children: James, Alexander, William (deceased), and an infant (deceased). His present wife also has four children: Ida, Frank F., Cassius C., Eugene A. and Alice. Patrick and Elizabeth Galbraith, parents of the above were born in Ireland. They came to America and settled in New York. Mr. G. enlisted in the Union army, Company E, 68th Regiment O.V.I., took part in a number of battles, and received an honorable discharge in 1864. He had one son in Company K, 38th Regiment O.V.I. who enlisted in 1861, and was mortally wounded at the battle of Jonesborough. Mr. G. settled in Fulton County in 1864. Post-office, Wauseon. JOHN SEIBOLD and his wife Rosine M. (Nuding) Seibold were born in Wurtemburg, Germany June 8, 1828 and November 7, 1832. They were also married in the same country July 3, 1850. They had a family of eight children: Catharine M., born January 18, 1851; Charles born July 4, 1852, died in February 1853; George J., born November 24, 1850; William H., born November 30, 1855; Theodore F., born January 9, 1858; Calvin E., born December 25, 1859; Mary A., born March 30, 1860; Amelia R., born July 17, 1866. Frederick and Catharine Seibold, parents of the subject of this sketch were born and married in Germany. Gottfrey and Margarett Nuding, parents of Mrs. S. were also natives of Germany. Mr. S. enlisted in the Union army in February, 1863, and was honorably discharged August 20, 1865. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, farmer and carpenter, section 9.
GAVIN SMELLIE, son of Gavin and Amanda Smellie, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, October 8, 1833. He was married in Madison County, Ohio, December 28, 1857, to Julia A. Whittecar, daughter of Ephraim D. and Rebecca Whittecar, the former of New Jersey, and the latter of Ohio, who was born in Madison County, Ohio, December 24, 1837. Their children are: Amanda, born June 21, 1859; Charles H. born April 12, 1861; Henry B., born June 26, 1863; Emma J., born November 3, 1871; Charles (deceased, November 14, 1862. Mr. Smellie enlisted in the Union army August 15, 1861, and was honorably discharged in September, 1864. He settled in Fulton County, in 1869. Post-office, Tedrow. Business, farmer, section 9.
