!RESEARCH: George Shaffer was born 12 Jan 1844 in Richland County, Ohio, son of Jacob L. Schaeffer and Margaret Keller. Note different spelling of surname in that generation. George was an enlistee of the 10th Ohio Volunteers, Sharp Shooters, later known as Co. H, 60th Regiment, Ohio Infantry of Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was in 15 battles of the Civil War during 1864 /65 in Virginia and was wounded at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. He was

hospitalized in Judiciary Square Hospital in Washington, DC, where the little finger of his left hand was amputated. He was discharged on 28 Jul 1865 at Delaney House, Washington, DC.
 

George married Catherine (Kate) Hamp on 19 Jan 1871 in Lenawee County, Michigan. The marriage was performed by Jonathon W. Clough, Justice of the Peace. George applied for an invalid pension on 25 Feb 1873. It was approved 10 Mar 1873 in the amount of $4.00 per month (Certificate #135642). On 13 Jun 1913 this was increased to $30.00 per month. George died 10 Aug 1933 in Ai, Fulton County, Ohio and is buried in the Ai Cemetery.

!RESEARCH: Catherine (Kate) Hamp was born 5 Feb 1850 in Indiana, the County of birth was probably Noble County, as her parents lived there at the time of the 1850 Census when she was four months old. Her first marriage occurred on 13 Mar 1867 in Fulton County, Ohio, to a Mr. E. G. . Meyers of Indiana. The story of this marriage as told by Blair Miller (H4175) and confirmed by Eva (Miller) Snider (H4171), both grandchildren of Catherine, is that the marriage was forced by her father, John, for a sum of money. On a trip back to Toledo, Catherine escaped

from her husband, never to see him again. She found work as a chambermaid in one of the large Toledo hotels, where she was still working at the time she met and wed her second husband, George Washington Shaffer. Years later, when her father was old and living in Williams County, Ohio, she would bundle up her children and go by horse and buggy to help care for the father that sold her into an unwanted marriage.
 

Catherine predeceased her husband, passing away on 17 Jun 1928 of tuberculosis, according to a certified copy of her death certificate from Fulton County, Ohio. Curiously, it lists her as "widowed".
