SAUDER
Jacob Sauder, son of Daniel and Barbara (King)
Sauder, was born near
Archbold, Ohio July 3, 1879, and died of a
heart attack while at his work
in Archbold on August 30, 1951, at the age
of 72 years, 1 month and 27 days.
On January 14, 1900, he was united in marriage
to Leah Nofziger. After
28 years of married life she passed away.
This union was blessed with
a son, Harry, and a daughter who died in infancy.
On November 14, 1936, he was again united in
marriage to Martha Nofziger
of Albany, Oregon, they sharing the joys of
marital life for nearly 15 years.
In his early years of life he united with the
Central Mennonite Church
and remained a very faithful and loyal member
until his death.
There remain to mourn his sudden and unexpected
departure, his wife,
one son, three grand-daughters and one great-grandson.
He was one
of a family of eleven children: four brothers,
seven sisters, three having
preceded him in death: Amelia (Mrs. Jonathan
Nofziger), Jacob (deceased),
Elizabeth (Mrs. Menno Grieser), Daniel J.,
Fanny (Mrs. Enos Roth), Lydia
(Mrs. Frank Goldsmith), Minnie (deceased),
Caroline (Mrs. Harry Goldsmith).
By these and a host of other friends, he will
be greatly missed in the church
and in the community.
Rest on, dear loved one, your labors are
o'er;
Your willing hands will toil no more.
A loving one true and kind,
No friend on earth like you we'll find.
The call was sudden, the shock severe,
We little thought his death so near;
And only those who have lost can tell

Mrs. Audrey Schelling, 53, wife of Maurice
of Toledo and daughter of Mrs.
Emma Burkholder of Wauseon, died last Thursday
after a long illness.
Mrs. Schelling before her marriage was an employee
of Waldeck's store
and had many relatives and friends in Wauseon.
Other relatives surviving are: Sisters, Fanny
and Mary of Wauseon, Alice
of Holland, Merlin and Inez of Toledo; brothers:
Harold of Wauseon and
Otto of Detroit.
Burial was made at Forest cemetery, Toledo.Funeral

6. SAMUEL
SCHLATTER
Samuel Schlatter, son of John and Magdalena
Schlatter, was born near Archbold,
Ohio, Jan. 24, 1866, and passed away at the
Wauseon Convalescent Home on
Friday morning, Feb. 26, 1953, at the age
of 87 years, 1 month and 3 days. Death
came peacefully after many months of failing
health. During his illness he many
times expressed his desire to be released
from this body and be with his Lord.
His entire life was lived in the Archbold
Community.
On March 1, 1894, he was united in *marirage
with Eliza Nofziger. Seven children
were born to this union of whom 6 remain to
mourn his departure.
He united with the Evangelical Mennonite church
in April 1927 and remained
a faithful member until his death. He took
an active interest in the activities of
the church as long as his health permitted.
He was preceded in death by his companion who
passed away Sept. 9, 1940, one
son Olen, who succumbed to typhoid fever while
a missionary in India in 1942
and one grandchild.
He is survived by the following children, 3
sons, Floyd of Bay City, Mich., Ormond
of Swanton and Myles of Archbold. Three daughters,
Mrs. Oliver Rupp of Wauseon,
Mrs. Ed Liechty and Mrs. John Cady of Toledo,
13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Also, one sister, Mrs. John Kaehr of Bluffton,
Ind.

convalescent home, Friday, Feb. 26,
after a long illness. Services were held at
Evangelical Mennonite church, Sunday
afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. E. Britsche
and Rev. John Osborne. Burial in
Archbold cemetery. Survived by three sons,

Harold C. Schmucker, 54, of Dame St., Pettisville,
died shortly after arrival
at Detwiler Hospital, early Tuesday morning.
Born in Fulton County, he has been a resident
of Pettisville for many years,
and was a partner in the Nofziger & Schmucker
Poultry Farm.
Survived by his wife Marvel; sons Charles of
Adrian, Mich. and Dean with the
U.S. Armed Forces; daughters, Mrs. Phyllis
Short of Wauseon and Mrs. Janet
Rychener of Hawaii; mother, Mrs. Hannah Schmucker
of Archbold; brothers
George of Wauseon, and Earl of South Bend,
Indiana; sister, Mrs. Grace King of
Wauseon; and 12 grandchildren.

Mrs. Sylvia V. Schmucker, 69, of 313 Murbach
St., Archbold, died Saturday
morning at Northcrest Nursing Home in Napoleon
where she had resided the
past month.
Born near Archbold, she lived her entire lifetime
in this area. Until August
of this year She was employed at Sauder Woodworking
Co., in Archbold
for 38 years.
Survived by her husband, George; one son, James
Schmucker, Archbold; twin
daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Donna) Nafziger of
West Unity and Mrs. LaMar (Doris)
Short of Stryker; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
three brothers,
Milton Short, Willard Short and Calvin Short,
all of Archbold; and two sisters,
Mrs. Olen (Myrtle) Beck and Mrs. Herman (Frieda)
Beck both of Archbold.
A family service was held at 10:30 a.m., with
burial in the Lockport Cemetery.
Memorial service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m.
in the Lockport Mennonite Church
conducted by Rev. Keith Leinbach, Rev. Walter
Stuckey and Rev. Carl Yoder.

LOUELLA M. Lindau SCHROEDER
Louella M. Lindau Schroeder was born at Archbold,
Ohio on the 11th day of
May, 1900. Her parents, George and Mary Lindau,
brought her to her Lord
and Savior soon after her birth through the
Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Her
childhood and youth were spent in Archbold
where she attended the public
schools and received her early religious training
as a member of St. Martin
Lutheran Church. She became a communicant
member of the above mentioned
church through the act of confirmation. Having
attended the University at Bowling
Green, she was qualified as a teacher and
practiced this profession for several
years before her marriage.
On July 26th, 1921 she was united in marriage
with Carl F. Schroeder.
This union was blessed with four sons, the
oldest of whom, Melvin, fell
on the battlefield in defense of his country
during the Second World War
on January 5, 1944.
For two years the Schroeders lived on a farm
southeast of Archbold, and
then moved to a farm northeast of the same
village, where they remained
for 22 years.
In 1944 the family bought a farm near Wauseon,
where they have resided
even* since.
Mrs. Schroeder throughout her life has been
active in the work of the church,
at first as a teacher and organist in St.
Martin Congregation in Archbold and
during the last six years in the organizations
at Trinity church in Wauseon.
Two and one-half years ago she suffered a stroke
from which she never entirely
recovered. However, she continued her usual
activities until Saturday last, when
early in the evening she suffered another
stroke and was called from this life
three hours later. She had reached the age
of fifty years, three months and one day.
She was a thorough Christian, a devoted wife
and mother, and a trusted
friend of many.
She is survived by her grieving husband, her
father, three sons, Dale, Wayne
and Donald, one sister Mrs. Harold Burkholder
of Archbold, and many other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August
15, at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Wauseon, Pastor P. F. Radloff, officiated.
Interment was made in Wauseon
Cemetery.

SEILER
Tena Seiler, daughter of John and Elizabeth
Beck, was born in Fulton
County, Ohio, May 3, 1883 and departed this
life at Memorial Hospital
Wauseon, Ohio, July 2, 1955, aged 72 years,
one month and 29 days.
In her youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour
and united with
the Mennonite church and was a faithful member
of the West
Clinton congregation.
On Oct. 17, 1909 she was united in marriage
with Clarence Seiler
and together they shared life's joys and sorrows
for more than 45
years. To this union were born one son and
five daughters: Lola,
(Mrs. Chester Gensler), Lambertville, Mich.,
Marcus, Swanton, O.;
Cathrine, (Mrs. Robert McMurtry of Toledo);
Berneda, (Mrs. Lowell
First) and Evelyn, (Mrs. Dale Short, both
of Wauseon, 0.), and
Frieda, (Mrs. Duane Able, Lambertville, Mich.)
She was a kind and loving wife and mother,
keenly interested in
the welfare of her family. While in Florida
in Feb. 1954, she suffered
a fractured leg which caused much suffering
and later other ailments
developed causing her death. She retained
a constant Saviour
always being committed to His will.
There remain to mourn her departure her sorrowing
husband; one
son, five daughters; nine grandchildren; two
brothers: Menno Beck
Stryker; and Joseph Beck Wauseon; one sister,
Mrs. Fannie Miller,
Pettisville, O., and many other relatives
and friends.
Weep not that her time is over,
Weep not that her race is run
God grant that we may rest so calmly,
When our work like hers, is done.
She is not dead, she is only risen.
To live with God whom she has known.

being there since Friday.
She had been in failing health for about 1½
years.

p.m. in the West Clinton Mennonite church with
Revs. E. B. Frey and Olen Nofziger officiating.

Shaffer
Dies Suddenly (November 17, 1954)
As we go to press word was received that Mr.
Dwight Shaffer was stricken with
a heart attack Wednesday morning and died
that evening at Detwiler Memorial
Hospital. Mr. Shaffer was foreman of the packing
department at the McCord
Corp. since it opened in 1941.
A few months ago his wife suffered a severe
stroke and is now confined in a
hospital in Toledo. Besides his wife
Zora he is survived by his mother,
who resides in California.

WAUSEON, O., Nov. 19 Dwight Edward Shaffer,
54, died Wednesday in
Detwiler Hospital here after a long illness.
He was foreman at the McCord Corp.
Surviving are his wife, Zora, and mother, Mrs.
Della Downey, of Simi, Calif.
Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the
Edgar Mortuary, the Revs. Carl Vincent
and John Osborne officiating. Burial will
be in Wauseon Cemetery.

SHORT
Alma Short, daughter of Henry and Rachel (Frey)
Aschliman, was born in Williams
County, O., Jan. 18, 1898 and suddenly passed
to her eternal reward on the
morning of Oct. 14, 1953, at her farm home
near Stryker, O. Aged 55 years,
8 months and 26 days.
On February 27, 1922, she was united in marriage
to Ira Short. They were permitted
to share the joys and sorrows of life together
almost 32 years. Three children came
to bless this home.
She is survived by her loving husband, two
sons, Clell Charles of Stryker, O;
Leon *Kieth of Archbold, O., and one daughter
Crystal A. (Mrs. Alvin Troyer)
of Stryker; eight grandchildren and three
sisters, Mrs. Ada Eash and Mrs.
Hulda Stamm of Archbold, O. and Miss Adeline
Aschliman of Berwyn, Ill.
Also Frederick Ganshaw of San Antonio, Texas,
who was reared in her
parents home and is as a younger brother.
She also leaves nieces,
nephews and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one
brother and one sister.
In her younger years she accepted Christ as
her personal Savior, united
with the Lockport Mennonite Church, remaining
faithful until death.
Mother was always concerned for the spiritual
welfare of her family and church,
and was always willing to lend a helping hand
to those in need especially to the sick.
For many years she taught a Sunday School
Class and will be greatly missed by
all who knew her. "The Lord hath given, and
the Lord hath taken away, Blessed
be the Name of the Lord."

P. SHORT
Eli P. Short was born May 11, 1873, near Archbold,
Ohio, died March 4th, 1951,
in Miami Beach, Florida, at the age of 77
year, 9 months and 22 days.
On Dec. 29th, 1896, he was united in marriage
with *El__ Short, who passed away on
Feb 11th, 1925. To this union were born 9
children: Bertha, Charles, Wilbur, Orvil,
Ilva, Elton, Dora, Nola and Rollin.
Besides his companion, there preceded him in
death two sons, Charles and Elton, also
one grandson, Wilbur Wayne Short, one brother,
Peter C., one sister Katie (Mrs.
Charles Crossgrove).
On Dec. 24th, 1935, he was united in marriage
to Lulu McLain. He is survived
by his wife, three sons, four daughters, one
step-daughter, 15 grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren, two brothers, and
a host of relatives and friends.
He moved to Florida eight years ago because
of ill health. On March 3rd, he
was taken to the hospital where he died the
following day.

SHORT
Jesse Short, son of Joseph and Barbara Short
was born near Archbold, Ohio on
February 16, 1878. On June the 26th Brother
Short suffered a heart attack and was
taken to the hospital at Bryan, Ohio, where
he passed away on June 28, 1953 at
the age of 75 years 4 months and 12 days.
On November 10, 1903 he was united
in marriage with Caroline Short. Sister Short
passed away January the 12th, 1941.
This union continued for over 37 years; living
on a farm near Stryker for a number
of years, later moving to Stryker where Brother
Short lived prior to his death.
To them were born two sons, both dying in infancy.
He leaves to mourn his departure
eight brothers: Peter J., Emanuel, Simon,
Ezra, John of Archbold, Ohio; Elmer of
Crissey, Ohio and Joseph of Archbold, Ohio,
Ira of Wauseon,O.; four sisters: Mary
(Mrs. Menno Beck) of Stryker, Ohio; Leah (Mrs.
Elmer Werder) West Unity, Ohio;
Barbara (Mrs. Clifford Armstrong); Anna May,
Archbold, O.
There preceded him in death his companion,
two sons, his parents, step mother, three
sisters and two brothers. Brother Short accepted
Christ as his personal Savior in youth
united with the Lockport Mennonite Church
and remaining faithful until the Lord called
him home.
Jesse was a kind neighbor and friend, willing
to lend a helping hand. He deeply
appreciated the help that was rendered to
him by Mr. and Mrs. Menno Beck
and Mrs. Elmer Werder after the death of his
companion. He will be missed by
all who knew him.

SHORT
Jonas Short, son of Peter D. and Barbara Short
was born near Archbold, Ohio,
May 17, 1869. He departed this life September
13, 1952 at the age of 83 years,
3 months, 21 days.
On December 20, 1894, he was united in marriage
with Eliza Rupp who preceded
him in death January 11, 1946. To this union
three daughters were born: Edna,
who died at the age of two years, Estella
and Leona (Mrs. Erie Sauder) both of
Archbold, Ohio.
In his youth he united with the Mennonite Church
and was an active member as
long as health permitted.
He had been failing in health for several years
due to hardening of the arteries.
There preceded him in death, one daughter,
one granddaughter, his parents, several
brothers and two sisters. There remain to
mourn his departure two daughters, three
grandsons, three brothers, Aaron P., Daniel
P., Emil, four sisters, Sarah, Anna (Mrs.
Levi Rupp) Arminda (Mrs. Peter Lugbill) and
Ida, (Mrs. Adolph Stamm), all of this
community.

Funeral services were held at the Central Mennonite
Church, Sept. 15, with Revs.
Henry Wyse and P. L. Frey in charge. Interment

Short, was born near Archbold,
Fulton County, Ohio, April 14, 1866. Departed
from this life at the Bryan Hospital,
Wednesday morning, March 8, 1950. Aged 83
years, 10 months and 22 days. Death
followed an illness of 5 years.
On Feb, 4, 1892, he was united in marriage
to Jannie Nofziger, who passed away
in 1935. This union was blest with one daughter
and two sons.
He is survived by his daughter, Phebe, Mrs.
Ben. Bowers of Archbold, O. two
sons : Seth, of West Unity, and Alfred, of
Archbold, Ohio; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-
grandchildren; one brother, Jonas Short, of
Stryker, O.; one sister, Martha,
Mrs. Sam. Aeschliman, of Archbold, O.; and
many other near relatives and friends.
He was of a family of 11 children. Preceding
him in death were his parents,
four brothers and four sisters, of whom two
brothers died in infancy.
As a young man he accepted Jesus Christ as
his personal Savior, united with the
Mennonite Church, and remained faithful until
death. He was much interested in
the work of the church and served a number
of years as Trustee of the Lockport
Congregation.
For the last 23 years he made his home with
his daughter and her husband.
His last illness, of four weeks in the hospital,
was spent with much patience
and a longing desire to go Home with his Lord.
It was always a joy to him to
visit with friends and relatives and he spent
much of his later years in this
way. He was a kind Christian father for which
we shall always thank the Lord.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning,
March 11, in the Lockport church, in
charge of Simon Stuckey, D. W. Graber and
Walter Stuckey. Burial in Lockport
cemetery.

HARMON SHORT
Lydia Short, daughter of Christ and Mary Beck,
was born near Pettisville, O.,
December 5. 1877. Departed this life at the
home of her son, Christie Short, near
Archbold, O., on October 3, 1950, at the age
of 72 years, 9 months and 28 days.
On August 16, 1900 she was united in marriage
to Harmon Short, who, preceded
her in death April 30, 1942. To this union
6 children were born. Alta (Mrs. Nelson
Grieser) Bertha, (Mrs. Harvey Frey) Christie,
Orlan D. (who died at the age of
4 years), Letha (Mrs. Lester Richer) and Glenford,
all residing in the vicinity of
Archbold.
In her younger years she accepted Christ as
her Savior and united with the Mennonite
church, and remained faithful unto the end.
She was regular in church attendance, and
was interested in the spiritual welfare of
her family.
Her departure is mourned by 5 children, 24
grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren,
2 brothers, Peter of Pettisville, and Samuel
of *Grabil, Ind. 2 sisters, Leah, (Mrs.
Christ Miller) of Archbold, and Sarah (Mrs.
Wm. Lantz) of Pettisville, besides a
host of relatives and friends.
Her husband, 1 son, 3 grandchildren, 3 sisters
and 2 brothers preceded her in death.
"A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled."

Short
Mary Short, daughter of Daniel S. and Emma
Gautsche Wyse, was born south of
Archbold, Ohio in Henry County on Oct. 18,
1896 and passed from this life on
Nov. 16, 1977 at her home near Pettisville,
Ohio, Her age was 81 years and 29
days.
Mary spent her whole lifetime in this area
and enjoyed her family and her home.
She was a farmer's wife, the farm home being
northwest of Pettisville, Ohio. In
1944 they moved from the farm to the present
home east of Pettisville. She
enjoyed good health for her age, except for
a difficulty in hearing.
On Feb. 26, 1911 Mary was baptized on confession
of faith and became a member
of the Mennonite Church. She has been a faithful
member of the Central congregation
all these years, living a devoted life always
ready to serve. She was active in WMSC
work.
On Dec. 13, **1977**(?1917?) Mary was united
in marriage to Cletus Short. Together
they shared life's joys and sorrows for over
50 years. To their union were born six
children; three sons and three daughters.
She was a loving mother and freely gave
of herself to her family. Family ties were
very meaningful to her and she held a
genuine interest in each of her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Since her husband's death on May 3, 1968,
Mary continued to maintain her home,
but spent much time in the homes of her children.
She was preceded in death by her
28. PETER
C. SHORT
Peter C. Short, son of Peter Short and Mary
Stuckey, was born on a farmnear Archbold,
Ohio, October 22, 1878. One of a family of
five children. He passed away Nov. 8, 1942,
at his home in Fayette, Ohio, aged 64 years
and 16 days.
As a young man Mr. Short went to West Unity,
where he was interested in the grain
business. There he met and married Mary Beach
in Nov. 1909. To them was born
2 children, Paul Nathan and Ralph Beach. Mary
Beach Short passed to the life beyond
in Jan. 1936.
In Aug. 1937, Mr. Short was married to Enid
Foglesong at Fayette. He is survived by
his widow, Enid Short, two sons, Lieut. Paul
Short, Ft. Meade, Mr., and Pfc. Ralph Short
in Officers Training at Quantico, Va.
Also three brothers survive, Enos of Stryker,
Ohio, Eli of Marion, Ohio, and Simon of
Bryan, the father, mother and one sister,
Katie Crossgrove, preceded Mr. Short in
death several years ago.
Mr. Short was well known in business circles
throughout Fulton and Williams counties.
Having been active in the grain business,
the clothing business and in real estate for
many years. For the last six or seven years
he had been connected with *Lubgill Bros.
Inc., at Archbold. He became ill and was forced
to retire a little over 2 years ago.
Mr. Short was a member of the Methodist church,
in which he was active as long
as his health permitted. He was highly respected
in his community and by the
large number of relatives and friends who
with his family survive him.
Funeral services were held in the West Unity
Methodist church Wednesday,
Oct. 11, 1942. Rev. Waiter Reitz assisted
by Rev. Simon Stuckey officiated.

SHORT
Rose Short, daughter of Christian and Catherine
Graber was born January 3, 1869,
and departed this life December 30, 1950,
at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 27
days. Death came rather suddenly after a lingering
illness during which she was
completely resigned to the will of God.
April 18, 1889 she was united in marriage with
Amos Short, who preceded her in
death 21 years ago. Four children were born
to this union, two (LeRoy Albert and
Oliver D.) also having preceded her in death.
Two others, Forest and Edith (Mrs.
Adam Short) both of Stryker, Ohio, remain
to mourn the loss of mother.
Others left in sorrow at her departure three
grandchildren and four great grandchildren;
also 1 brother, Peter, and sisters Delila
Short and Lydia Jacquin, all of Stryker, and
Lina Beck of Archbold, Ohio, together with
many other relatives and friends.
In her youth she accepted Christ as her Savior
and remained a faithful follower
of Him and also a faithful member of the Mennonite
church until God gently called
her home.
She was kind and patient, giving continual
admonition to her children and quietly
living her Christian testimony, all of which
will long be remembered by those who
knew her.
Twill not be long our journey here,
Each broken sigh and falling tear
Will soon be gone, and all will be
A cloudless sky, a waveless sea.
Though sad we mark the closing eye
Of those loved in days gone by,
Yet sweet in death their latest song
We'll meet again; twill not be long.
Services were conducted at Lockport Mennonite
church Tuesday, January 2, 1951,
at 10:30 a. m., with Rev. Simon Stuckey, Walter
Stuckey and D. Wyse Graber
officiating. Interment was in Lockport cemetery.

ANN SHORT
Sarah Ann Short, daughter of Joseph C. and
Mary (Klopfenstein) Short, was born
in Fulton county, Ohio, Jan. 26, 1879, and
passed to her eternal reward at the home
of her son, Sylvan, near Archbold, O., on
Nov. 23, 1954,at the age of 75 years, 9
months and 28 days.
Early in life she accepted Jesus Christ as
her personal Savior, united with the Mennonite
church in Allen county, Ind., later transferring
to the church in Fulton county, Ohio, and
was a faithful member of the Lockport congregation
until death. As a child she moved with
her parents to Allen county, Ind., and when
18 years of age her family again moved to
Fulton county Ohio, in which vicinity she
lived the remainder of her life.
On Jan. 12, 1905, she was united in marriage
with John S. Short, who was called in death
on Jan. 23,1927. Six children came to bless
their home.
She is survived by 3 sons and one daughter:
Sylvan R. and Glen W of Archbold, O.;
John J. of West Unity, O., and Viola, Mrs.
John Miller, of Fayette, O.; 13 grandchildren;
one great-grandchild; 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary
Neuhouser of Grabill, Ind., and Mrs. Emma
Allison of Stryker, O. Also many other relatives
and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband,
2 sons: Clifford, who died at the
age of 18 years and Jesse who died at the
age of 20 years; also two brothers.
Her health was failing for some time. The last
three months were days of suffering
which she bore with patience and always had
a testimony for her Lord. Mother was
always interested in the spiritual welfare
of her family, community and church.

Sylvan Ray Short, son of John S. and Sarah
Short, was born near Archbold, O.,
April 2, 1906 and was suddenly called from
this life on the evening of Sept. 17, 1956,
at the age of 50 years 5 months and 15 days.
In young manhood he accepted Jesus Christ as
his personal Savior,united with the
Mennonite Church and was a faithful member
of theLockport Congregation until
death.
On April 4, 1929, he was united in marriage
with Pluma Yoder of Leo, Ind.
Three children came to bless their home.
He is survived by his loving Companion, his
three children, Donald Lee
and his wife Donna of Stryker, Ohio; Coral
Jean and her husband, Marlin
King, of Wauseon, Ohio, and Merle Jay at home;
three grandchildren:
Terry Lee, Patsy Ann and Rhonda Sue King;
also two brothers, Glen W.
Short, Archbold, and John J. Short, West Unity,
Ohio, and one sister,
Mrs. Viola Miller, Fayette, Ohio, and many
other relatives and friends.
He was preceded by his parents, and two brothers,
Clifford and Jesse.
He lived all of his life near the place of
his birth, using most of his time
as a farmer. He was regular in church attendance
and took an active
interest in community affairs. He was deeply
appreciated by his family
as a husband, father, grandfather and brother,
and by his many friends.
He had spent the day with his sons putting
up baled hay when suddenly at 6:30
he was stricken and in a few minutes passed
away. We say with Job of old,
"The Lord hath given, the Lord hath taken
away, Blessed be the Name of the
Lord."
Funeral services were conducted from the Short
Funeral Home and at the Lockport
Church on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 20, by
the local ministry.Burial in the Lockport
cemetery.

Mrs. Verda C. Short, 62, 203 Wilson St., Delta,
died early Monday morning at the
Fulton County Health Center following a short
illness.
She was born and reared in Archbold, daughter
of the late Daniel D. and Sarah Rupp.
Surviving are husband, Earl J. Short; daughter,
Mrs. Romaine Bryan, Ft. Wayne, Ind.;
son, Merle J. Short, Churubusco, Ind.; eight
grandchildren; one brother, V. D. Rupp,
Greenville, South Carolina.
Services will be held at 2:15 p. m. on Thursday
in the Evangelical Mennonite Church,
Wauseon, with Rev. Charles. Gautsche officiating.
Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery,
Delta. Penrod Funeral Home, Delta, was in
charge of arrangements.

Verna Short, daughter of John and Catherine
(Aeschliman) Yost, was born near
Archbold, Ohio, March 5, 1880, departed this
life at home in Pettisville, Ohio,
June 25, 1955, at the age of 75 years, 3 months
and 20 days. On Feb.22, 1906,
she was united in marriage with Aaron P. Short.
They lived in happy wedlock
over 49 years.
This union was blessed with 6 children: Lucinda
(Mrs. Jacob Riegsecker)of
Archbold; Clara (Mrs. Willard Richer; Irene
(Mrs. Clifford Nofziger);Stanley,
all of Wauseon, Ohio; Kenneth, of Archbold,
and Alice (Mrs.Joseph Short)
of Moncolva, Ohio.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her sorrowing
companion, 6 children,12
grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren:
2 sisters; Mrs.
Leah Yost and Mrs. Sarah Boeckner, both of
Moundridge, Kansas; 1 sister-in-law,
Mrs. Eda Yost of Denver, Colorado; besides
a host of relativesand friends.
Mother was the first to break the family circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 1
sister and 1 brother.
In youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour
and remained faithful to her
Lord, and to the Central Mennonite Church
where she was a member at
the time of her death. Her place was seldom
vacant in worship services,
also in the Sewing Circle work where she took
an active part. About 3 years
ago her health began to fail, caused from
a heart ailment, but was able to
be about her home duties, until early Saturday
morning when the Lord suddenly
called her home. She was a kind and loving
wife and mother,and will be greatly
missed by the family and friends.

Wilma Short, daughter of Soloman and Emma (Nafziger)
Short, was born near
Woodburn, Ind., May 4, 1898 and departed from
this life at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Maynard Burkholder on July
4, 1955, at the age of 57 years
and two months.
On Nov. 10, 1920, she was united in marriage
with Edwin D. Short. To this union
two daughters were born. After only four years
of married life her husband passed
away leaving her to raise her children which
she faithfully did by the grace and help
of God.
Early in life she accepted Christ as her personal
Savior, united with the Mennonite
church and was a faithful member of the Lockport
congregation until death.
She is survived by her two daughters, Berneda,
(Mrs. Donald Beck) and Mabel Ann,
(Mrs. Maynard Burkholder), both of near Archbold,
O.; her aged mother, Mrs. Emma
Short; four grandchildren; Dianne and Rex
Beck and Anthony and Rise Burkholder;
four sisters; Mrs. Rosa Nafziger; Mrs. Lillian
King, both of Archbold; Mrs. Lucille
Short of Stryker; Mrs. Ella Miller of Wauseon
and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, father
and one brother. Mother was a
patient sufferer during her lingering illness,
and continued to enjoy her peace and
faith in her Lord, with her children and grandchildren.
True it is as stated in Prov.
31:28 -- "Her children rise up and call her
blessed."
I cannot say, and will not say,
That she is dead, she is just away;
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
She has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since she lingers there.
So think of her faring on,
As dear in the love of there as in the
love of here,

GARFIELD SIEGEL
Arthur Garfield Siegel, son of the late Daniel
W. and Anna Roth Siegel, was born
on July 30, 1884, in Larned, Kansas. When
he was two, his parents returned to
Archbold where he spent the rest of his life.
After graduating he taught school in Franklin
and German townships for four years.
In 1908, he took over his father's farm where
he has lived ever since.
On June 27, 1912, he was united in marriage
with Arvah Skeels Hallett and to this
union were born five children; James, Angola,
Ind., Mrs. Roy (Anna) Bernath, Edon;
Robert Mark, who died in infancy; Ruth, Cleveland;
and Philip, U. S. Army.
He had been superintendent of the Methodist
Sunday School for thirty-four years
and was a faithful member of the Church all
his life. For sixteen years, he served
as a member of the School Board during which
time the present high school was
erected. He was also a member of the Community
Commercial Club.
His whole life was built upon the principles
of Christian living, which were exemplified
by his kindliness, generosity, and genuine
interest in people.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother
John, sister Kathryn (Mrs. C. Hyatt)
and son, Robert. He leaves to mourn, his beloved
wife, Arvah; four children; three
grandchildren: James and Susan Siegel and
Gary Bernath; two sisters: Mrs. J. B.
(Carrie) Theobald, Bryan; and Mrs. E. A. (Meade)Buehrer,
of Archbold, and a
host of relatives and friends.

Kathryn Sigg
Taken by Death
Mrs. Kathryn Sigg, 94, died Thursday noon in
the Fulton County Hospital after
an illness of seven weeks.
Born in Russia, she came to the United States
in 1891, settling in Pettisville.
Twenty eight years ago she moved to Wauseon.
She was the oldest member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church.
She is survived by two stepdaughters, Mrs.
Eleanor Steinbrecker, of Wauseon and
Mrs. Hannah Clark, Columbus; two grandchildren,
Mrs. Evelyn lserman, Toledo and
Kenneth Robinson, Downey, Calif.; four great
grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren;
25 step great grandchildren and several step
great great grandchildren and two sisters,
Mrs. Elizabeth Lehman, Pettisville, and Mrs.
Margaret Wills, of Cleveland.
Services were held Monday, July 16, 1962 in
the Penrod Funeral Home, Wauseon with
the Rev. Paul R. Gerlach officiating. Interment
was in the Pettisville Lutheran Cemetery.

Rites Sunday For Mrs. Lydia Sigg
Mrs. Lydia Sigg, 90, of Pettisville, died Thursday
morning at the Detwiler Memorial
Hospital, Wauseon, where she had been a patient
the past two days. She was born
in Henry County, Ohio and lived in Pettisville
the past 20 years. She was a member
of the Reformed Mennonite Church.
She leaves one daughter and six sons, Milton
of Napoleon, Emery of Wauseon, Owen
of Archbold, May (Mrs. John Vogelsanger) of
Archbold, Raymond of Fayette, Wilmer
of Pettisville, and Earl of Wauseon, seven
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one
sister Mrs. Samuel Wiederkehr of Archbold
and one brother Ezra Burkholder of West Unity.
The body was in the Short Funeral Home until
services Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at the Reformed Mennonite Church. Rev. William
J. Rupp officiated. Burial was in the
Pettisville Lutheran Cemetery.

Smith
After a residence of 68 years, in Pettisville,
Mrs. Elizabeth Smith passed from this life
to her eternal reward on June 9, 1951, at
the age of 90 years, 11 months and 11 days.
Elizabeth Smith daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth
Leininger, was born on a farm south of
Pettisville on June 29, 1860. On April 12,
1883 she was united in marriage with Henry Smith,
who preceded her in death 14 years ago. To
this union were born two children, Alta Robinson,
of Pettisville and Alfred Smith, of Rochester,
N. Y., who are left to mourn the loss of a most
kind, loving and honored mother, who bore
her illness patiently and uncomplainingly and was
ready when her Master called. She was a member
of St. Paul's Lutheran church and was
faithful in attendance and work for the church
as long as her health permitted.
Besides these children she leaves 1 brother,
Berneth Leininger, of Coral Gable, Florida;
4 grandchildren, and six great-grand children;
a number of nieces, nephews and a host of
friends and neighbors, who with the family
will revere her memory.
Funeral services were conducted from the family
residence in Pettisville, Tuesday afternoon
June 12, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. H. Ide officiated.
Interment was in the
Pettisville cemetery.

Retired Minister Passes Away
Pastor Of Defenseless Mennonite Church 22 years
- 11 At Pioneer
Rev. E. M. Slagle, 74, passed away in his home
on Vine street, early Wednesday
morning after a year's illness.
Funeral services were held at the Defenseless
Mennonite church, Saturday afternoon
conducted by Rev. Jacob Schmucker of Berne,
Ind., and Rev. Harry Bertsche of Gridley,
Ill. Burial in Floral Grove cemetery, Pioneer.
Rev. Slagle served as pastor of the local Defenseless
Mennonite church for 22 years,
retiring three years ago. For two years after
retirement he represented the North American
Bible Society in several states and held other
important offices in the church.
Prior to coming to Archbold he served 11 years
as pastor of the Pioneer Defenseless
Mennonite church. His ordination took place
in 1905. He served in a few other Pastorates.
During his pastorate in Archbold the fine new
modern church was built and dedicated
and the membership made rapid growth during
the years he served as pastor here.
Rev. Slagle filled an important place in the
community and was well-liked, and active
in community church affairs.
Surviving are his wife, two sons: H. D. of
Lansing, Mich., and Ralph of Wauseon; four

E. M. Slagle was born
in 1869 near Gridley, Illinois, Livingston County, and died
in his home June 27, 1944, at the age of 74
years, 11 months, and 4 days.
In 1890, he was united in marriage to Magdalena
Summers of McClain County in
Illinois. To this union were born, nine children
were born, three of whom preceded him
in death - two sons and one daughter.
They spent fourteen years in Illinois, three
years in Nebraska, four years in Michigan,
and the rest of their married life in Ohio.
In 1905 he received his call to the ministry
and three years later the call to the eldership.
He served eleven years as pastor of the Pioneer
Church and twenty-two years as pastor
of the Archbold Church. More than 600 people
were baptized during his ministry, over
400 of these being, in the Archbold Church.
He served as Conference Chairman many
years. He was a member of the Foreign Mission
Board twenty-seven years, and
Chairman of this Board fifteen years.
Through all this time many trials and hardships
were met. But if we had the choice
again, we would have chosen the same course.
We have lived with lived with you
and shared many joys and sorrows together.
"They that sow in tears shall come together
rejoicing, bringing their sheaves with them."

because of my absence, and urging
me to be faithful in my work.

B. SOMMERS
Levi B., son of Jacob and Magdalene Sommers,
was born near Pettisville, Ohio,
July 20th, 1880, died November 23rd, 1950.
Death followed a lingering illness caused by
a stroke which rendered him helpless for
a period of sixteen months.
He was one of a family of five children. His
father, mother, three brothers and one
sister preceded him in death, he being the
last of the family to answer the Summons.
When only a child he moved with his parents
to Stuttgart, Ark.
After the comparatively early death of his
mother he lived in the home of his eldest
brother, Samuel.
In 1920, he with his brothers' family located
near Pryor, Okla., where he resided till
1943 when he returned to Archbold: Ohio. His
immediate survivors are a number of
nieces and nephews.
For several years he had his home with a nephew,
Daniel L. Sommers, where he was
tenderly cared for -- which he appreciated
so much.
In his youth he accepted Christ and became
a member of the Mennonite church, being
faithful until death.
He was of a quiet and patient disposition and
his cheerful smile will long be remembered
by those who knew him.
Life! I know not what thou art,
But know that thou and I must part;
And when, or how, or where we met,
I own, to me's a secret yet.
Life! We've been long together,
Through pleasant and through cloudy weather;
'Tis hard to part when friends are dear,
Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh, a tear,

41. SARAH
SOMMERS
Sarah (Freyenberger) Sommers, daughter of Preacher
Christian and Katie Freyenberger
was born in Fulton county near Pettisville,
Ohio, April 9, 1876. She died at the home of
her son Raymond Sommers in Wauseon, Ohio,
October 9, 1952 at the age of 76 yrs.
6 mo. On Oct. 26, 1903 she was married to
John Sommers who preceded her in death,
June 18, 1917.
This union was blessed with two sons Raymond
C. of Wauseon and Clarence J. of Toledo, Ohio.
For more than 30 years she was an invalid and
for the last eight years was confined to
her bed. During these years she required much
care and assistance which was cheerfully
given by her sons. In her youth she became
a Christian and united with the Mennonite
Church and remained faithful to the end.
She bore her affliction very patiently, always
having a clear testimony of her faith in Christ.
She gave encouragement and strengthening of
faith and hope of many who
visited her.
Those who survive her are two sons and their
companions, five grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren, four sisters: Mrs.
Sam. Stuckey and Lucy Freyenberger,
Archbold, Ohio; Mrs. Levi Beck and Mrs. Chas.
Schmucker, Pettisville, Ohio, and
many other relatives and friends.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom was recalled,
The boon His love has given,
And the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
Funeral Services were held Sunday, Oct. 12,
at the West Clinton Mennonite Church.
Services were conducted by Rev. Ernest Fowler,
Wauseon, and Rev. Ed. Frey, Archbold.
Final resting place at Eckley Cemetery.

SOWERS
(Dec. 15, 1936)
Sam. Sowers, age 72 years, passed away in his
home north of Pettisville, Monday noon,
at 12:30, of heart trouble. He had been in
poor health several years. Funeral services
are to be held Friday at 10:30 a. m., in the
Lauber Hill church, conducted by Rev. W. J.
Rupp. Interment in church cemetery. He leaves
widow, two daughters, two sons, four
grandchildren, sister and brother.
43. Christopher
Harmon Spangler
Christopher Harmon Spangler, son of Harmon
G. and Susan Gainer *Spengler, was
born February 8, 1880, in Franklin Township,
Fulton County, Ohio, and passed from
this life, July 6, 1959, at the Blosser Nursing
Home, Wauseon, Ohio, following a long
illness. He had attained the age of 79 years,
4 months, and 28 days.
Mr. Spangler was a life long resident of Fulton
County, following the occupation of
farming. He had resided on the present farm
in Clinton Township for more than 48
years.
On September 25, 1901, he was united in marriage
to Miss Emma Merillat, and to
this union were born five children, two daughters
and three sons. Mrs. Spangler
passed from this life, March 20, 1918.
In March of 1932, Mr. Spangler was united in
marriage to Miss Matilda Seidner,
and to this union one daughter, Gladys, was
born. Mrs. Spangler preceded her
husband in death in January of 1933.
Besides his life's companions, and one daughter
Ada, who passed away in infancy
in the year of 1910, he was also preceded
in death by his parents, and two brothers,
George, who passed away in infancy, and Alvin,
who passed away in October of 1958.
He leaves to mourn their loss, two daughters,
Mrs. Ilvah Robinson of West Unity, and
Mrs. Gladys Croach of Napoleon; sons Lloyd
of West Unity; Orville and Kenneth,
both of Wauseon; brothers Charles of Wauseon;
Amos of Archbold, and Elger of
Detroit, Michigan; five grandchildren; four
great grandchildren; one uncle, Mr. Frank
*Spengler of Fayette; many other relatives
and a host of friends.

Drowns In Coldwater Lake, Tuesday
Daughter Of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Stamm Loses
Life When Seven Girls Overturn In Boat;
Body Not Located Tuesday Night
Connie Stamm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon
Stamm, drowned in Coldwater Lake,
Mich., Tuesday afternoon at about 1:00, when
the boat in which she and six other children
from Archbold and community were riding, sank
in about 15 feet of water.
Fifteen pre-teen-age girls, members of a Sunday
School class of the Evangelical
Mennonite church, were taken in three cars
by Mrs. John L. Short and Marlene
and Mrs. M. K. Stuckey to the John L. Short
cottage at Coldwater Lake for an
all-day picnic.
In the boat, besides the victim, were: Janeth
Schantz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Milton Schantz; Sharon Rupp, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Marvin Rupp, Stryker;
Linda Stamm, sister of Connie; Clara Miller,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Miller;
Ruth Ann Short, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe
Short; and Marlene Short,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Short, who
was operating the motor-driven boat
which the family owned.
The 16-foot aluminum boat was in 15-foot water
near place known as Indian Point
when the tragedy occurred. Nearby fisherman
saw the accident.
The boat nosed into water and turned over,
dumping the seven girls suddenly.
Fishermen were able to rescue the others but
Connie's body did not rise, which led
rescuers to believe she had been caught in
weeds deep in the lake.
Dragnets, grappling hooks and every available
device, was used to try to find the
body, and until a late hour, Tuesday night,
could not be found.
Connie is the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon
Stamm. There are four other girls in
the family: Cars Lou, Linda, Judith, Joan;
and two boys: Fred and Michael.
